Canva is a graphic design platform launched in 2013; its purpose is to simplify the process of creating materials such as social media content, videos, and multimedia presentations. It works by offering thousands of templates and resources to help beginners or those with no prior design experience to create high-quality materials, effectively enabling anyone to design. Such a tool is incredibly useful for PR professionals, as it allows us to create designs quickly and efficiently without relying on complex software like the Adobe Creative Suite.

ChatGPT is an AI tool launched in 2022 designed to help with brainstorming and writing, such as drafting content or giving technical advice. It functions as a chatbot: you enter a prompt, and the AI generates responses that can then be refined and adapted to the specific project a public relations professional is working on. ChatGPT is an excellent tool for PR professionals, as it can be used for both PR writing and research.

Free or Annual Plan?

Both apps are excellent tools, but like anything else, they have their limitations. Canva’s free plan offers everything from social media graphics to resumes, providing 250,000 templates, a drag-and-drop editor, and a library of free photos, icons, and fonts. This platform offers exactly what a public relations freelancer who often wears many hats needs for day-to-day work, without requiring any payment upon sign-up. Canva also offers paid annual or monthly plans, which are convenient for companies or groups.

The ChatGPT app is an excellent tool, although the free plan has limitations. This plan offers access to GPT-5.5, messaging and file uploads, slower image generation, and desktop access to ChatGPT Work. While these features are impressive, their scope is limited, making the plan ideal for professionals who want to try out the tool. ChatGPT also offers paid plans, suitable for businesses or groups seeking advanced capabilities for work and productivity.

Canva's highlights:

  • Graphic design

  • Presentations

  • Videos

  • Collaboration features

These features are part of what Canva offers; the platform has a user-friendly interface that appeal to new or inexperienced users.

GPT Chat highlights:

  • Advanced reasoning models with GPT-5.6

  • Expanded messages and uploads

  • Complex and accurate image creation

  • Timely access to new features

These features are part of what Chat GPT offers; It is also rumored that it is used as a search engine, research tool, and tech troubles tool, among others.

Canva's disadvantages:

  • Export options are limited

  • AI-generated images and videos are not provided in high resolution

  • No phone support

  • Limited storage for designs

These are some of the downsides of Canva for PR professionals: if multiple platforms are used to edit or create content, designs created in Canva cannot easily be edited or used elsewhere, as the Canva file is the final product and cannot be edited unless done so within Canva itself.

Disadvantages of ChatGPT:

  • Relying solely on ChatGPT without using critical thinking (cheating)

  • Issues with accuracy

These are some of the downsides of ChatGPT; if used incorrectly without verifying the information or the source before creating content, it could jeopardize an individual’s or professional reputation.

Mobile and desktop compatibility:

Both Canva and ChatGPT can be used as apps, as well as in desktop or website versions.
